The Threat |
|
According to
statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers
for Disease Control (CDC), sedentary lifestyles, fast food, and
unknown genetic factors are accelerating diabetes at an alarming
rate. According to WHO, approximately 3.2 million deaths are caused
by diabetes, similar in number to deaths from HIV/AIDS. Thus
approximately 1 in 20 of all deaths is attributable to diabetes.

The Magnitude |
|
Today, at least 171
million people worldwide have diabetes. Projections call for an
estimated worldwide population of 366 million people to become
victims of diabetes by 2030, due to a combination of population
growth and ageing, and changing lifestyles. That’s 4.4% of the
global population. |

What Can Be
Done |
| Scientific evidence has shown
that a full and healthy life is possible with diabetes. While
the prevention of Type 1 diabetes remains an objective for the

New Facility Opens to Resolve the Shortage of Islet Cells for
Diabetes Transplantation
Washington, DC; Minneapolis, MN – January 24, 2007 State-of-art
facility opens to produce biosecure islet cells for
transplantation into diabetes sufferers.
For the first time, diabetes patients have new hope for an
unlimited supply of insulin-producing islet cells that can be
transplanted with minimally invasive surgery.
The 21,000 square-foot facility in Western Wisconsin is being
built with a $6.2 million grant from Diabetes Research &
Wellness Foundation (DRWF), a Washington, DC-based
not-for-profit, worldwide network dedicated to finding and
funding the cure for diabetes.
W. Michael Gretschel, volunteer president of DRWF, noted this to
be the first important step to implementing the possibility of
widely available transplants. "The Diabetes Research & Wellness
Foundation, Islet Resource Facility building will house clean
pigs that will be raised in a biosecure atmosphere, with the
intention that porcine islets will be declared an FDA approved
standard treatment for diabetes," says Gretschel
